The George Fern Company Sails into New Orleans with the NMMA for the Boat Show

The city of New Orleans has had a very difficult and challenging end of 2005. Despite being ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, the residents are pulling themselves out of the rubble and moving ahead. The 36th Annual New Orleans Boat Show was held March 8-12 in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. This was the first large consumer event to be held in the convention center since the devastating hurricane.

The George E. Fern Company was there to assist the National Marine Manufacturers Association carry on with their annual event. The show was set to take place in the Louisiana Superdome, but because of the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina, the show was held in the convention center.

“Having to relocate the show under such terrible circumstances was very difficult,” said Barbara Sclafani, show manager with the NMMA/New Orleans Boat Show. “Nick [Stammler, account executive with the George E. Fern Company] and his team were wonderful at meeting our needs – all of which were met immediately. I never heard a ‘no, we cannot do that.’ Whenever we needed something it was always handled.”

According to Stammler one of the most difficult tasks was coordinating the logistics of moving 600 fresh- and salt-water boats into the convention center. “The convention center is still a work in progress, part of it is still being remodeled and another part of it is being used as a hospital, so we had to work around these obstacles. Overall, the event was a success, despite all of the setbacks. I believe a record number of boats were sold.”

“The convention center is not typically a consumer-oriented venue, so we were teaching the staff of the convention center about our needs and what it takes to host a consumer-oriented show,” said Sclafani. “The George E. Fern Company made my life a lot easier with their flawless planning. We have used several decorators over the years and we were very pleased with them. They gave us a beautiful show.”

St. Louis Makes It Even Easier to Exhibit at the America's Center

Downtown St. Louis is undergoing a revitalization. Abandoned buildings are becoming trendy loft apartment homes. Hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs and shops are popping up all over the place, all within walking distance of St. Louis' convention center, the America's Center.

More than $3.5 billion is being spent on developments in downtown St. Louis near the convention center and the area's hotels. Meeting and convention planners will find a vibrant, new downtown ready to welcome their attendees.

America's Center offers 2.7 million square feet covering 32 acres in the heart of downtown St. Louis; over 80 meeting rooms; the largest ballroom (28,000 square feet) in Missouri, able to accommodate 2,230 people for banquets.

The recent opening of the 1,083-room Renaissance Grand Hotel & Renaissance Suites (across from the convention center) brought the total number of hotel rooms, within a mile of the America's Center, to 7,600.

In addition to the construction of the Renaissance Hotels, over the past several years, the Westin St. Louis (recently named the Number One Westin in the world), the St. Louis Hilton at the Ballpark, the Hilton St. Louis Downtown, the Residence Inn and Hampton Inn Gateway Arch, Sheraton City Center and the Drury Plaza Hotel have all opened.

Exhibitors or their full-time company representatives may now set up exhibit booths as large as 300 net square feet by themselves at America's Center. They may install and dismantle the exhibits and displays by hand and hang their own signs and graphics in the booth.

This development joins two other recently accepted work rule changes at America's Center that allow exhibitors to bring their personal vehicles to the dock area at the convention center and use a hand-cart to load or unload their booth materials. Exhibitors also may now pack and unpack their own personal computers.

Melanie Donnelly, America's Center labor relations manager

These important changes are examples of how labor at America's Center is evolving to meet changing customer needs according to Melanie Donnelly, the facility's labor relations manager. Donnelly meets with customers from the very beginning of the sales process and continues to work with them throughout their events, making sure that meeting planners, their exhibit managers and decorating contractors understand how to work efficiently with the trades at America's Center to create an easy, smooth-running event.

According to the America's Center manager, Donnelly, other hotel construction projects are in planning stages and existing hotels have renovated to remain first-rate and competitive in this rapidly improving environment.

General Managers of Borders Bookstores Travel to Austin in Hopes of Discovering Some Cool Stuff

When you go into Borders to purchase books, do you ever wonder where the stores hear about all of the new books to be released and where they find all those items displayed near the front of the register? Chances are they were discovered at the Borders General Managers Vendor Expo.

Held this year in Austin, Texas, over 700 general managers, representing approximately 500 Borders stores across the country were flown in for the one-day event on April 3, 2006.

For one day, the Austin Convention Center becomes a “shopping center” for all of the managers. Vendors representing an array of companies set up booths for managers to visit and pick up sample products, everything from soon-to-be released and new books to security companies, multi-media packages, food and janitorial supplies.

“It is really two events in one,” said Scott Shepherd, account executive for the George E. Fern Company. “There are two shifts of managers who come to the Expo; about 350 who come in the morning and 350 who come in the afternoon.” Each group has about two and a half hours to visit the various vendors and gather samples of products.

Once the managers have gathered all of their merchandise from the vendors, they take them to the shipping area set up by Shepherd and his team, and ship them back to their stores, where they share them with their co-workers. Once the first group is finished, the George E. Fern Company cleans out the shipping area and prepares it for the next group.

“We have a great partnership with the George E. Fern Company,” said Don Emery with Borders, Inc. “Working with [the George E. Fern Company] has made it really simple to do the show. Scott contacts the venue and decides on a floorplan that will meet our needs. They are able to move a huge amount of merchandise in and out very quickly and efficiently; we are very pleased.”

Start Your Engines with the George Fern Team at the Hotrod & Restoration Trade Show
Do you ever wonder where your neighbor got all the parts to restore his ’65 Mustang he’s been working on for years? Or how the teenager you passed on the street the other day got his car painted to look just like a lizard? Or where your dad found the bolts specifically made for a 1957 Chevy?

Chances are the specialty stores from which they bought them were exhibitors at the Hotrod and Restoration trade show that takes place in Indianapolis annually. Once a year the Indianapolis Convention Center becomes the headquarters for all things related to restoring and customizing cars. It’s a trade show for people who have restoration shops or sell parts for cars that are restored.

You can find just about anything you need for restoring or customizing a car you can imagine here – from complete body kits to original hardware to pistons to injector fuel – in the nearly 40,000 square feet of exhibit space. Approximately 5,000 car enthusiasts from 48 states attended the show to visit the 306 booths and all the wares on display.

“We have been the official show decorator for the past 10 years, since the show’s inception,” said Dave Thompson, account executive with the George E. Fern Company. “It’s a great show and is growing every year, as is the entire customizing and restoration market. It’s a great group of people to be around and a very exciting industry.”
According to Debbie Lewis with Hotrod & Restoration, “Throughout the past 10 years, the George E. Fern Company has been an extension of our staff.” Lewis is the show manager of the Hotrod & Restoration Trade Show. “Dave Thompson and his team always have really partnered with us to help grow the show. They always have great ideas and give us beautiful graphics and make the show look amazing.”

As an enhancement of the educational opportunities and exhibits at the show, the Petersen Automotive Museum, located in Los Angeles, brings cars to be displayed for all attendees to view.

“We always joke with our team and say the George E. Fern Company must put something in the water of their employees, because in all offices, everyone is so nice and helpful!” Lewis summed her experience up by saying, “Fern is very service oriented, not just with show management, but with our customers too. They are simply great to work with.”

The IEEE-IAS/PCA Cement Industry Technical Conference

For 48 years, the IEEE-IAS/PCA Annual Cement Industry Conference has been where leaders of the cement industry have gone to learn about the latest technology and breakthroughs in their field. The event, more commonly pronounced as the “I-Triple E” Show, took place this year in Phoenix, Arizona from April 9-11.

The location of the show is different each year; the show managers always try to combine the technical conference with a cement plant tour (either a new or a recently remodeled existing plant) for the attendees to visit.

There is much going on at the conference besides touring a local plant facility. The five-day event featured industry committee meetings, workshops, two days of technical presentations, safety award luncheon, awards banquet, hospitality suites and also 4,400 square feet of exhibit space with 118 booths for the 1,058 attendees to visit. Conference registration and hospitality functions took place at the Hyatt Hotel Phoenix, while technical presentations and the exhibits were located across the street at the Phoenix Civic Center.

The George Fern Company has been the general contractor for this event for four years. Joe Diamond, account executive with the George Fern Company, notes that this show always has a very professional look. “Show management puts on a wonderful conference. We are glad to help them achieve their goals for the show and also create a nice environment for their attendees.”

“Service by the George Fern Company has been absolutely exceptional,” said Lars Hansen, 2006 IEEE / PCA Conference Exhibit Chair. “They are superb to work with; nothing is ever a problem, everything can be done.”

The show will be in Charleston, South Carolina in 2007 and in Miami, Florida in 2008.

Industry Speaks

“While at the expo, I had the opportunity to experience first hand how your company’s staff operates. I do not recall ever receiving such astounding customer service from any other company I’ve dealt with in my 15 or so years of doing business. From beginning to end, I found every member of your team to be gracious, efficient, courteous and knowledgeable. Among hundreds of exhibitors, I never saw a line or experienced a single delay in processing. Even special problems were dealt with swiftly and effortlessly. From the heads of staff to the forklift operators, I was truly awestruck by the level of service and efficiency of operation within your organization. What started out as one of the most worrisome aspects of my exhibit experience had suddenly become my most trouble-free and positive experience.”

“I’m writing today to tell you that even my high expectations [of the George Fern Company] were exceeded. I cannot say that I am surprised by the service and attention to detail that was exhibited. I was struggling to carry heavy items from my car on move-in day. [A Fern employee] offered to help me, insisting that his help was part of the George Fern Company’s service. I certainly didn’t expect a Fern employee to help me with this type of thing, but it was very helpful and much appreciated. This level of customer service is not found often.”
