Water, Water Everywhere

How often do you just turn on the faucet while at home or work and don’t even give a second thought as to how the water becomes purified before it gets to you? Any member of the Water Quality Association (WQA) would be able to help you with this question.

The WQA Aquatech USA 2005 annual convention was held from March 31- April 1 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Exhibitors at the show come from all facets of the water quality industry, representing companies specializing in such things as filtration systems for residential and commercial use water treatment or ultra-purified water (used for kidney dialysis, for example); companies that assist smaller cities that get their water from wells (not municipal water systems); and even bottled water companies.

Three hundred and thirty one exhibitors (40 from Asia and Europe, 7 from Canada) occupied 58,600 square feet of exhibit space. In addition to the exhibit portion of the show, there were plenty of educational opportunities in which the exhibitors and attendees could participate such as “ Fundamentals, Standards, and Regulations of UV Technology,” “Pumps, Piping and Pressure” and “Business Succession Planning.”

Jeannine Collins, convention and meetings manager with the Water Quality Association said, “This was the first year we switched to using an online floor plan. The George E. Fern staff created it for us and maintained it. We were really pleased with the way it turned out. It was great for our exhibitors to just go to the web site and view what space was available or to see where their booth was located.”

“The George E. Fern Company is always quick to respond to an exhibitors’ needs, willing to help set up before or after show hours,” added Collins. “We think they do a great job and so do our exhibitors.”

“Many people from the George E. Fern Company contributed to the success of the show,” said Greg Pignatiello, account executive with the George E. Fern Company’s Cleveland office. “This is my sixth year with the show, but Jim Moore with our Nashville office has been working on WQA’s show for nearly 30 years. It’s been impressive to see the show change and grow over the years, especially with the growth in the international market.

Cincinnati Moves Offices

The George E. Fern Company’s Cincinnati office has a new place to call home. Recently they combined their office with their warehouse space, so that the entire Cincinnati staff is located in one location.

“The move has been great,” says Dave Thompson, the general manager of the George E. Fern Cincinnati office. “It’s much easier for communications with the Cincinnati team. Since we’re all in one place – our graphics department, the area where we construct displays and the warehouse – it’s so convenient for checking on works in progress and to be able to talk to the foreman or graphic designer face-to-face.”

The Cincinnati office had been in its previous location since 1967. The new address is 645 Linn Street, Cincinnati, OH 45203.

Kansas City Goes Live!

A new retail, entertainment, office and residential district is being built in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. City planners there hope to reenergize and breathe life back into its downtown, making it not only a place in which to work, but to live and play. The entertainment district that will soon attract legions of new visitors is called Kansas City Live!

The city of Kansas City is working with the Baltimore-based Cordish Company, one of the country’s leading developers of retail/entertainment and mixed-use projects in the United States. The Cordish Company specializes in entertainment retail centers and has won an unprecedented five Urban Land Institute Awards for Excellence, the highest possible national award for excellence in development. A major component of Kansas City Live! will be a new world headquarters for Kansas City-based tax giant H&R Block.

Rick Tyner, general manager of the Kansas City George E. Fern office, thinks Kansas City Live! will be a great selling point for conventions and shows to come to Kansas City. “After Kansas City Live! opens, visitors will no longer have to drive to other parts of the city to eat out and shop – everything will be right here. It will be a great addition to our city.”
Kansas City Live! will provide a vital linkage between downtown Kansas City’s core office buildings, convention center, hotels, residential units and attractions. The first phase of the $835-million district is projected for completion in late 2006. This phase will total approximately 425,000 square feet of retail/entertainment space. Upon completion of the second phase, the district will also contain 1,000 residential units and approximately one million square feet of office space. The second phase is scheduled for completion in 2007.

Kansas City Live! will include diverse amenities and imaginative architecture encompassing leading entertainment and retail concepts. It will transform itself from a thriving lunch and retail destination during the day to a unique and exciting dining and entertainment experience during the evening. It will feature innovative open storefronts, broad brick-paved sidewalks, extensive landscaping and a permanent performance stage for live entertainment.

Advanced Manufacuturing Exposition

The Advanced Manufacturing Exposition was held May 25-26 in conjunction with the AME SE Regional Conference, which was held May 24-26 at the Palmetto Exposition Center in Greenville, SC. Approximately 2,000 people visited the event’s 275 booths, set in 27,500 net square feet of space.

During the conference attendees had the opportunity to hear many great keynote speakers such as Scott Fullbright, plant manager of Rockwell Automation Roller Bearing Plant, and Terry Spalding, director of manufacturing for Maytag Jackson Dishwashing Products.

In addition to hearing speakers, attendees could take tours of area manufacturing plants and take advantage of the many educational sessions offered at the conference. Companies that specialize in motors/drives/power transmission, prototyping, ergonomics, electrical systems, components, sensors , robotics and much more exhibited at the show.

Exhibiting companies illustrate and demonstrate what they can design with a specific client in mind. They look at what the client’s needs are and what kind of product they want to produce. In turn, the manufacturer can build the machine that helps them create their product.

“This was the first year for the George E. Fern Company servicing the show and I think it went very well,” said Duncan Browder, an account executive in the George E. Fern Company’s Charlotte office. “Over the years there has been a lot of change in manufacturing with the advancing technology. I think it will be interesting to watch the industry, as well as the Advanced Manufacturing Exposition continue to grow.”

“The George E. Fern Company has been fantastic,” said Kristy Pacelli, operations manager for Reed Exhibitions, the company that manages the event. “They did everything we needed them to do quickly and efficiently. They were easy to work with – exactly what we were looking for. We have had great feedback from the exhibitors as well as the attendees.”

Putting Dynamic Ideas Into Action with IAEM's Ohio Valley Chapter

The Ohio Valley Chapter of IAEM held its regional convention May 17-19 in Louisville, Kentucky. Susan Friedmann, known as “The Tradeshow Coach,” opened with a session entitled “Looking for the Magic Bullet: How to Jump Start Exhibit Sales” where she discussed how to put dynamic ideas into action – a theme that resonated throughout the rest of the convention. She discussed the importance of asking the customer (your exhibitor) what they would like to see happen at your show/event and what issues matter the most to them.

The two-day event was packed with educational sessions and networking opportunities. Attendees heard panel discussions on such topics as “So… You Want MY Business,” “How Did I Rid My Show of Exhibitor Apathy?” and “What’s Wrong with Exposition and Meeting Planners?” All of the panel discussions consisted of top industry professionals who had lots of valuable information to share.

It wasn’t all work for the convention attendees; there was still plenty of time for fun. The George E. Fern Company helped attendees relax by sponsoring an afternoon of thoroughbred racing at Churchill Downs, which has recently completed a $121-million renovation. Some of the sessions were held in meeting rooms at the newly remodeled racetrack, where attendees enjoyed lunch in a private suite and they could watch the races while placing a few bets.

In addition to spending some time at the track, attendees had the option of a golf outing or enjoying Fourth Street Live!, Louisville’s new entertainment district located in the heart of downtown. Fourth Street Live! is within walking distance to the new Marriott hotel, and the newly renovated Galt House Hotel & Suites where some of the convention activities were held.
